Court defers Hindustani’s bail plea till Sep 20

New Delhi,  A Delhi court Friday adjourned till Sep 20 hearing on the bail plea of former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker Sohail Hindustani, arrested for his involvement in the cash-for-vote scam that stunned paliament in 2008.

On July 22, 2008, three BJP members of the lok Sabha waved wads of currency notes inside the house ahead of the schduled trust vote, alleging they were given the money to vote in favour of the Manmohan Singh government.

Delhi Police filed a charge sheet Aug 24 against former BJP MPs Fagan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Bhagora, former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, his former aide Sanjeev Saxena, senior BJP leader L.K. Advani’s former associate Sudheendra Kulkarani and Sohail Hindustani.

Book four cops for filing false case: Court

New Delhi, A Delhi court Tuesday acquitted an accused in a 2006 extortion case registered in north Delhi and directed the city police chief to book four policemen and the complainant who implicated him.

The police officials are head constable Hari Khan, sub-inspector Rajinder, inspector Anil Bureja, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Ravi Shankar. The complainant in the case was Rajiv Pahuja.

“The commissioner of police is directed to lodge an FIR (first information report) against these accused and any other person who is found to have indulged in criminal activity under appropriate sections of law. A copy be sent to him,” said Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav.

Cash-for-votes case: Two ex-MPs’ bail plea hearing Sep 29

New Delhi,  A Delhi court Tuesday deferred the hearing on the interim bail pleas of two former Bharatiya Janata Party MPs — Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Singh Bhagora — till Sep 29 in the cash-for-votes scandal that rocked parliament during a trust vote in 2008.

Special Judge Sangita Dhingra Sehgal deferred the matter after defence counsel Sidharth Luthra sought more time to argue on the bail application.

“Court may kindly list the bail plea for hearing on a further date,” counsel said while appearing for the two former MPs.

Lawyers plan strike Wednesday on Hazare’s arrest

New Delhi,  Proceedings in Delhi courts are likely to be hit with lawyers in all the six district court complexes deciding to strike work Wednesday to protest the arrest of anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare, an advocate said.

“We will hold a complete strike in all the local courts to support Anna’s cause and also to oppose the prime minister’s statement that the judiciary should not come under the Lokpal,” said Rajiv Khosla, spokesperson of Co-ordination Committee of all Bar Association of Delhi.

29-year wait for justice; Judge promises speedy verdicts

New Delhi,  “Justice delayed is Justice denied” – with this observation a Delhi court ruled to give back to two brothers their plot of land in Karol Bagh after a 29-year-long legal battle. The judge also owned up responsibility “on behalf of all my predecessors” for the inordinate delay in the case.

The brothers, one of whom is named Jai Singh, had approached court in 1982 to get back their land from the tenant. On Aug 6 this month, the Delhi Court took possession of the plot from the tenant and gave it back to the brothers.

The court, while passing the order, accepted responsibility for the delay of almost three decades by previous judges in deciding a tenancy row, saying the prolonged trial denied justice.
