Gujjar violence a National Shame : SC

New Delhi, June 5 (IANS) The Supreme Court Tuesday asked the governments of Delhi, Rajasthan and Haryana to explain why they could not contain the Gujjar movement for tribe status and said the incidents of violence were a "national shame".

Taking suo motu cognisance of the clashes, which paralysed life in Rajasthan for a week and spilled over the national capital and its suburbs Monday, a bench of Justices Arijit Pasayat and D.K. Jain issued notices to the state governments.

The court asked the governments to explain by June 18 why they let matters spin out of control.

The bench also appointed senior advocate Rajeev Dhawan as amicus curiae to assist the court in the matter.

Highways were blocked while train traffic was disrupted and life paralysed in Rajasthan for a week with the Gujjars agitating for Scheduled Tribe status. On Monday, the Gujjars called a daylong shutdown in the Indian capital.

The Gujjars called off their stir late Monday after the Rajasthan government promised to have their demand examined by a judicial panel within three months.
