Delhi High Court to hear BMW expose July 2

New Delhi, June 11 (IANS) The Delhi High Court will hear July 2 a report prepared by the registrar general about a TV sting that showed an alleged nexus between the prosecution and defence in the 1999 BMW hit and run case.

A division bench of Justice J.P. Singh and Justice S. Murlidhar Monday deferred the hearing till next month and said a bench headed by Chief Justice M.K. Sarma would hear the matter.

The registrar general of the court conducted a probe into the sting operation telecast by NDTV news channel May 30 on the strength of the original CD and transcript of the conversations. All this was placed before the judges Monday.

The sting showed public prosecutor I.U. Khan apparently directing Sunil Kulkarni, a key witness to the 1999 tragedy that killed six people, to contact senior advocate R.K. Anand, who represents prime accused Sanjiv Nanda.

Anand's assistant allegedly struck a deal with Kulkarni to turn hostile for a sum of Rs.20 million, the TV channel claimed.

In 1999, Nanda, driving his BMW, allegedly ran over six people here. Although blood was found on the wheels of his car, Nanda's lawyers claimed that it was an accident. He got bail after nine months in jail when Kulkarni changed his story and claimed it was a truck and not a BMW that caused the accident.

The bench had said earlier that "the contents of the video done by NDTV is a serious issue concerning the administration of the criminal justice system" and wanted "facts should be brought out".
